Short Description of Yeast Infection

Yeast is part of the normal flora of a healthy vagina. However, when the yeast grows too much it can lead to an infection. Yeast infections are also known as vulvovaginal candidiasis. The medical term for a yeast infection is candidiasis as the fungi known as Candida cause it. Yeast infection can also occur on different parts of the body and may affect the mouth, esophagus and skin and may cause sepsis when it infects the bloodstream.

Symptoms of Yeast Infection

Mouth – presence of curd-like white patches (thrush) inside the mouth on the tongue and palate.

Esophagus – difficulty in swallowing (dysphagia) and chest pain.

Skin – patches of red, moist, weepy skin.

Vagina – itchiness and soreness, vaginal discharges like soft cottage cheese, pain and discomfort during intercourse.

Sepsis – Fever, shock and multiple organ failure.

About Yeast Infection

The fungi known as Candida albicans for the most part cause yeast infection in women. Under normal conditions the growth of Candida is kept at a healthy minimum first by other native bacteria and a healthy immune system. If the population of healthy bacteria is reduced due to the need to use antibiotics or if the body moisture that surrounds native bacteria undergoes a change in its pH and chemistry it can result to overgrowth of the yeast resulting to a yeast contamination.

A yeast contamination can wreak havoc on different parts of the body by causing either localized or severe infections depending on the health and immune status of the individual affected. Normally, it may be limited to the areas of the mouth, genital area (vagina) in women or skin. However, people with an immunocompromised status are not just more likely to develop a simple yeast problem but a more severe internal infection as well.

Etiology of Yeast Infection

The primary culprit involved in a yeast infection is the fungus known as Candida albicans however; other species may also cause a health risk. As a rule, the bacteria Lactobacillus ensures that there is no yeast overgrowth that happens but in the event that it dwindles in numbers, symptoms of Candida can occur. Yeast infections in the vagina is not considered to be a sexually transmitted disease but may spread through oral-genital contact during intercourse.

Diagnosis of Yeast Infection

The doctor will ask for a detailed medical history and may ask about your diet, recent use of medication such as oral contraceptives or antibiotics and other medication that may suppress the immune system. In the event that diagnosis is uncertain, a sample may be obtained by gentle scraping of the involved area for laboratory testing and culture.

Duration & Prevention

In an otherwise healthy person, yeast infection has a short duration if proper treatment is initiated. The good news is it is easy to prevent Candida infections by ensuring your skin is kept clean and dry and only using antibiotics as advised by a doctor. Following a healthy lifestyle and diet can help immensely in preventing the disease.

For women that are susceptible they are advised to:

  • Avoid douching products as this disrupts the normal vaginal flora allowing Candida to grow unabated
  • Avoid feminine deodorant products or deodorant pads and tampons
  • Use underwear made from cotton and other natural products
  • Wear loose fitting pants and skirts
  • Wash underwear at high temperature
  • Avoid wearing tight underwear or pantyhose
  • Eat a healthy and balanced diet
  • Promptly change wet clothing
  • Avoid using hot tubs or hot baths
