Short Description of Tinnitus

The term tinnitus is a medical condition that essentially means ringing in the ears. It refers to the sensation of hearing a ringing, buzzing, whistling, chirping or hissing sound that may be continuous or intermittent and may vary in loudness. The condition is often worse when background noise is kept at a minimum like in a quiet room or at night.

Symptoms of Tinnitus

Persistent ringing, roaring, buzzing, hissing or whistling sensation in the ears that may be continuous or intermittent.

Causes of Tinnitus

The most common cause of tinnitus is prolonged exposure to loud noise. Approximately 90% of people with the condition report to have some level of hearing loss due to prolonged noise exposure. The noise may result to permanent damage to the sound-sensitive cells located in the cochlea, a spiral-shaped structure located in the inner ear. The most common people that are at risk of developing the condition includes: street-repair technicians, carpenters, rock musicians, pilots and landscapers. People that work using loud machines or tools like guns, chainsaws or kids that listen to loud music are affected the most. It only takes a single exposure to a sudden extremely loud noise to cause the condition.

Other conditions that cause tinnitus are:

  • Blockages in the ear due to cerumen or ear wax buildup, presence of ear infection and or rarely, a benign tumor of the nerve that lets us hear known as the auditory nerve
  • Certain types of drugs can induce tinnitus such as aspirin and several kinds of antibiotics, anti-inflammatory medication, some sedatives and antidepressants including quinine. Over 200 prescription & non prescription medications have listed tinnitus as a possible side effect
  • As a result of the natural aging process due to deterioration of the cochlea as well as other parts of the ear
  • Meniere’s Disease that affects the inner portion of the ear
  • Otosclerosis, a condition that results in the small bones of the middle ear becoming stiff
  • Temporomandibular joint dysfunction and other neck and jaw issues
  • Medical problems such as hypertension, cardiovascular problems, anemia, allergies, hypothyroidism. Diabetes and some autoimmune diseases

Head & Neck Trauma

A severe injury to the head and neck region may result in damage to nerve, flow of blood and muscle resulting to tinnitus symptoms. Patients that had injuries to the head and neck region report higher tinnitus volume including greater variability in terms of sound, frequency and location. Tinnitus that is related to head and neck issues or even dental issues is referred to as somatic tinnitus.

Sinus Pressure and Barometric Trauma

Tinnitus symptoms may also occur as a result of a severe flu, cold or sinus infection that can create an abnormal pressure in the middle ear, impacting normal hearing. Acute barotrauma as a result of rapid and extreme changes in air or water pressure can result to damage of the cochlea and hence tinnitus. Barotrauma usually occurs in:

  • Scuba diving, snorkeling or diving activities
  • Flying as in abnormal elevation changes
  • Concussive explosions from combat

Risk Factors

Any person can suffer from tinnitus issues but these conditions can greatly increase the risk of developing the condition:

  • Age – As you get older, the number of healthy nerve cells in the ear declines and may result in hearing problems, often related to tinnitus
  • Sex – Statistics show that men are more likely to develop the condition than women
  • Smokers – They have a higher risk of developing the condition
  • Cardiovascular Disease – Condition such as those that affect blood flow like hypertension or narrowed arteries such as atherosclerosis can increase the risk of having the condition
  • Prolonged exposure to loud noise – as mentioned above, prolonged exposure to loud noise results in damage to the minute hair cells in the ear that serve to transmit sound to the brain.

Types of Tinnitus

There are two kinds of tinnitus that affects patients:

Subjective Tinnitus — This type of tinnitus is a sound that only the patient can hear and is considered as the most common kind of tinnitus. It may happen as a result of ear problems in the outer, middle or inner ear. It can also happen as a result of problems with hearing such as auditory nerve damage or in the part of the brain that interprets nerve signals as sound, known as the auditory pathways.

Objective Tinnitus — This kind of tinnitus is a sound that the doctor hears when he or she performs a diagnostic examination on the patient. It is a rare kind of tinnitus that may be secondary to a blood vessel issue, problems in the middle ear or muscle contractions.

Diagnosing Tinnitus

Tinnitus Sound Matching – presenting common tinnitus sounds back to the patient can help identify the specific perception of tinnitus. The technician may adjust the pitch and layer multiple sounds in order to establish a replica of the tinnitus.

Minimum Masking Level – The volume needed in order to mask or cover the perception of tinnitus is ascertained so as to determine how loud a patient perceives the tinnitus

Loudness Discomfort Level – This is the volume at which external sound becomes painful for a patient suffering from tinnitus. This measurement determine the degree of sound therapy needed to treat the condition.

So you have Tinnitus and it’s driving you crazy.

  • You have buzzing, humming or squealing in your ears.
  • Sometimes it moves from your left ear to your right ear.
  • Sometimes the noise is in both ears.
  • You can’t concentrate like you used to.
  • You find yourself reading lips when you are with a group.

If this sounds like your life, you’re not alone. There are millions of people in the world that have Tinnitus. Now what did your doctor tell you about what you can do for your Tinnitus?

  • Live with it.
  • Try to ignore it, but it won’t go away.
  • Buy some expensive ear plugs that make another noise to mask the one you already have.
  • Try supplements.
  • Go to the Chiropractor or try Acupuncture

But nothing seemed to work, did it. Oh, maybe a few things seemed to help for a little bit, but it never went away.
