Short Description of Tendons & Ligaments Injury
Tendons and ligament injury refer to sprains, strains and even tears that result to pain, inflammation and immobility of the affected body part.
Symptoms of Tendons & Ligaments Injury
Signs and symptoms will depend on the severity of the injury as well as the location of the affected body part and may include: pain, swelling, bruising, limited ability to move the affected portion, hearing or feeling a pop in the joint at the time of the injury.
About Tendons & Ligaments Injury
A tendon or ligament sprain refers to either stretching or tearing of the ligaments – the tough bands of fibrous tissue that connect two bones together in your joints. The most common area for a sprain to occur is in the ankle. The difference between a sprain and a strain is that the former injures the bands of tissue that connect two bones together while the latter pertains to injury to a muscle or to the band of tissue that connects a muscle to the bone.
Etiology of Tendons & Ligaments Injury
Sprains occur when you overextend or tear a ligament while severely stressing a joint. Sprains happen in the following circumstances:
- Ankle — While walking or exercising on an uneven surface, landing awkwardly from a jump.
- Knee – Pivoting during an athletic movement
- Wrist – Landing on an outstretched hand during a fall
- Thumb – Skiing injury or overextension when playing sports like tennis.
Kids have areas of softer tissue known as growth plates located near the ends of their bones. The ligaments around a joint are mostly stronger than these growth plates, so kids are more likely to experience a fracture as opposed to a sprain.
Risk Factors
- Environmental – Uneven or slippery surfaces can make one more prone to injury
- Fatigue – Tired muscles are less likely to offer good support for your joints.
- Poor Equipment – Poor or ill-fitting footwear or other sporting equipment can increase the likelihood of an injury.
Types of Ligament or Tendon Tears and Rupture
Tendon and ligament tears and ruptures can affect a lot of joints in the body. However, the knee often takes the brunt of these injuries. Two most common knee tears or injuries include:
- Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears. The ACL is a major ligament that controls the motion of the knee.
- Meniscus Tears – The knees feature two menisci. The tough cartilage balances forces through the knee joint, allowing the femur and tibia to glide against each other smoothly without causing damage to the bone.
