Short Description of Sensory Processing Disorder
Sensory processing disorder refers to a condition wherein the brain has difficulty receiving and responding to information that comes through the senses. People with the condition are oversensitive to things in their environment. They may find common sounds to be overwhelming or painful.
Symptoms of Sensory Processing Disorder
Symptoms of patients that have sensory processing disorder may depend on how they process different sensations. Children who are easily stimulated may suffer from hypersensitivity. This means that they have increased sensitivity to sensory inputs such as light, sound and touch. Kids may also experience hyposensitivity resulting to reduced sensitivity to sensory output. Sensory processing disorder may result to a:
- Low pain threshold
- Appear clumsy
- Fleeing without any regard to safety
- Covering eyes or ears frequently
- Picky food preferences or gagging when eating foods of certain kinds
- Resistant to hugs or sudden touch
- Soft touches seem too hard
- Difficulty controlling emotions
- Difficulty focusing
- Difficulty adapting responses
- Behavioral issues
About Sensory Processing Disorder
Sensory processing disorder is a neurological condition in kids that can affect the way the brain processes information from the senses. Those that have the condition can be extra sensitive to or not react to sensory input, depending on how they are affected. Examples of sensory input are: light, sound, taste, touch and smell.
Sensory processing is normally divided into eight kinds and these are:
- Proprioception – This is the “internal” sense of awareness you have for your body. This is what helps you maintain posture and motor control.
- Vestibular – This refers to the inner ear spatial recognition and is what keeps you coordinated or balanced.
- Interoception – The sense of what is happening in your body including whether you feel hot or cold and whether or not you feel your emotions.
- Five Senses – These refer to our five senses namely: touch, hearing, taste, smell and vision.
Etiology of Sensory Processing Disorder
It is not fully known what causes sensory processing disorder in children but experts believe that it has something to do with the way the sensory pathways in the brain process and organize information. Based on a 2020 review and a small 2017 study, sensory processing disorder is related to prenatal or birth complications and can include: premature birth, low birth weight, parental stress, alcohol or drug consumption during pregnancy. Overexposure to certain chemicals as well as not experiencing much sensory stimulation in childhood can also be risk factors for its development.
