Short Description of Scar Tissue
Scars normally form part of the healing process of the body. The body builds tissue to repair damaged skin and close gaps from an injury. Scars come in different shapes and sizes as they result from accidents, burns, surgery, acne and some illnesses. As time passes, most scars fade but they never really completely go away.
Symptoms of Scar Tissue
There are times that scar tissue may be painless. When it comes to skin scar tissue you will notice a thicker texture compared to normal skin. Scar tissue can also be painful and the symptoms to expect are:
- Swelling
- Redness
- Itchiness
- Throbbing
- Sensitivity to touch
- Reduced range of motion
- Creaky sounds or sensations
About Scar Tissue
Scars are part of the body’s healing process after the skin is compromised. The skin repairs itself by growing new tissue to pull together the wound and fill in any gaps due to the injury. It is made primarily of collagen. Scar tissue comes in all shapes and sizes. People with darker skin like African, Asian or Hispanics including red-haired individuals are more prone to develop keloid scars. These are raised scars that develop and grow beyond the injured region. Nearly everyone develops some kind of scar be it from an accident, surgery, acne or illness like chicken pox.
Etiology of Scar Tissue
When scar tissue develops on lighter skin, it usually presents as pink or red. As time passes, the pinkish color fades and is replaced by slightly darker or lighter than the skin color. People with darker skin tones, the scars appear as dark spots. Sometimes scars itch and can even be tender. The appearance of a scar depends on several factors such as:
- Origin of injury such as burn, injury or severe acne
- Size, severity and location
- Treatment for the wound like stitches or bandages
- Age, genes, ethnicity
Scars are part of the normal healing process of the body. When the skin integrity is compromised or injured, the body creates new tissue made of collagen in order to reseal itself. When scars develop, the collagen fibers repair the damaged skin and close any open areas.
Outlook
Most scars do fade over time and do not cause any long-term health issues. How a scar develops depends a lot on its location, size and type. Some scar tissue can create problems months or years after its formation. As the nerve endings begin to grow back, the scar can become itchy or painful. Skin cancer can also develop in scars most especially those caused by burns. It is recommended to wear sunscreen or keep the scar covered to reduce the risk.
