Short Description of Prostate Enlargement
Prostate enlargement is a benign condition that affects almost all men as they age. It is also called benign prostatic hypertrophy or BPH.
Symptoms of Prostate Enlargement
As the prostate gets larger, it starts to pinch the urethra. This causes symptoms that affect your urine flow, such as:
- Dribbling when you finish
- A hard time getting started
- A weak stream, or you pee in stops and starts
When your urethra is squeezed, it also means your bladder has to work harder to push urine out. Over time, the bladder muscles get weak, which makes it harder for it to empty. This can lead to:
- Feeling like you still have to pee even after you just went
- Having to go too often — eight or more times a day
- Incontinence (when you don’t have control over when you pee)
- An urgent need to pee, all of a sudden
- You wake up several times a night to pee
- Urinary tract infections, bleeding, bladder damage, and bladder stones
About Prostate Enlargement
Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a medical condition wherein the prostate, a walnut-sized body part composed of glandular and muscular tissue grows in size. The organ surrounds parts of the urethra; this is the tube that carries urine and sperm out of the body. The prostate is situated directly below the bladder and in front of the rectum. The urethra passes through the prostate, so if it enlarges, it can keep urine or semen from passing through the urethra.
Etiology of Prostate Enlargement
Prostate enlargement is the most common prostate condition found in men. Virtually all men will develop some form of enlargement as they age. By age 60, 50% of men will have signs of prostate enlargement and by 85, 90% will have the condition. Approximately half of affected men will develop symptoms and require treatment. Doctors are not sure what really causes the prostate to enlarge. Many say it has something to do with hormonal changes that come with age.
Diagnosis of Prostate Enlargement
Your healthcare provider will examine your medical history and give you a complete physical examination. There are several studies that may be done in order to help diagnose the condition and these are:
- A survey in order to evaluate how severe the symptoms are.
- Flow study to determine how slow the urinary stream is compared with normal urine flow.
- A study to detect how much urine is left in the bladder after you are done urinating.
- Cystoscopy to check the bladder.
Treatment of Prostate Enlargement
There are several treatment options available to address benign prostatic hypertrophy and these include:
- Lifestyle changes
- Medications
- Sound therapy
- Minimal invasive procedures
- Surgery
Risk and Prevention
Men who are at higher risk include:
- Those over the age of 50
- Family history of prostate enlargement
- Overweight or obese individuals
- Sedentary lifestyle
- Those suffering from erectile dysfunction
There is no sure fire way to prevent prostate enlargement. However, losing weight and eating a good balanced diet rich in fruits and veggies can help. Staying active also helps control weight and hormone levels.
