About Nerve Injury
Nerves are an essential part of the electrical wiring system of the brain that transports messages from it and the rest of the body. Motor nerves carry messages between the brain and muscles. Sensory nerves carry messages between the brain and different parts of the body to signal pain, pressure and temperature.
Any nerve injury can affect the brain’s ability to communicate with the muscles and organs. Damage to the peripheral nerves is known as peripheral neuropathy. There are approximately 20 million Americans that have some form of peripheral nerve damage.
Etiology of Nerve Injury
Some of the potential causes of the condition:
- Autoimmune Diseases – Multiple sclerosis, Guillain-Barre’ syndrome, systemic lupus erythematosus and inflammatory bowel disease.
- Cancer – The tumors may push against or crush the nerves. Radiation and chemotherapy can produce damage in certain patients.
- Compression or Trauma – Pinched nerves in the neck, crush injuries and carpal tunnel syndrome.
- Diabetes – Approximately 70% of people with the disease suffer from some form of injury to the nerves.
- Side Effects of Drugs and other Toxic Substances – Chemotherapy drugs, certain drugs used for HIV infection, chronic alcohol consumption, and accidental ingestion of poisonous substances like lead, arsenic and mercury.
- Motor Neuron Disease – Diseases like ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease) may result in progressive damage.
- Nutritional Deficiencies – Deficiencies in vitamins B6 and B12 can produce symptoms of injury.
- Infectious Diseases – Lyme disease, herpes, HIV and hepatitis C can cause nerve injury.
