About Muscle Strain

Muscle strains or pulled muscle results when a particular muscle is torn or is overstretched. This usually happens due to fatigue, improper or overuse of the muscle. Muscle strains can happen in any muscle but they are most commonly found in the lower back, neck, shoulder and hamstring, the muscle just behind the thigh region.

Etiology of Muscle Strains

Acute muscle strains happen when there is sudden tearing that happens as a result of injuries or trauma. This can happen because of: failure to warm up correctly prior to a physical activity, poor flexibility, poor conditioning, overexertion and fatigue.

Acute strains happen when the patient: slips or lose footing, jumps, runs, throws something, lifts something heavy or lifts something in an awkward position. It is also more common in cold weather because the muscles tend to be stiffer in lower temperatures.

Chronic Muscle Strains are usually due to repetitive movement and can occur because of: sports like rowing, tennis, golf or baseball, holding your back or neck in an awkward position for long periods of time, and poor posture.

Muscle Strains versus Hernias

Muscle strain is caused by tears in the fibers of the muscle. Hernias on the other hand occur when one of the internal organs or other body parts protrude through the wall of muscle tissue that usually holds it in place. Hernias normally does not get better on their own, and surgery may be needed to repair it.

Diagnosis of Muscle Strain

It can be diagnosed through a physical exam, symptoms and history of recent physical activity. If you are suffering from a severe strain, the healthcare provider may request imaging tests including ultrasound and MRI.

Prevention

The most effective means of preventing muscle strain is to stretch and warmup prior to exercising. Increasing the overall flexibility can also protect the muscles from future injury. The more flexible you are, the more space the muscle fibers can stretch before beginning to tear.
