Short Description of Migraine

Migraine is a neurological condition that results in several symptoms and is characterized by intense, debilitating headaches. Patients suffering from migraine may also have nausea, problems with speaking, numbness and tingling sensation, sensitive to sound and light. Migraines often run in families.

Symptoms of Migraine

Migraine pain is often described as:

  • Throbbing
  • Pounding
  • Pulsating
  • Debilitating
  • Perforating

Symptoms of migraine often start at least one to two days before the actual episode itself. This period is called the prodromal stage and may include:

  • Craving for certain kinds of food
  • Depression
  • Anergia or fatigue
  • Frequent yawning
  • Irritability
  • Hyperactivity
  • Stiffness of the neck

Etiology of Migraine

Experts have yet to identify the definitive cause for the condition. Changes in chemicals in the brain along with a decrease in the neurotransmitter serotonin causes the condition. Other factors that can trigger a migraine attack:

  • Exposure to bright lights
  • Exposure to severe heat or extremes in weather
  • Barometric pressure changes
  • Hormonal changes in women
  • Dehydration
  • Excessive stress
  • Hearing loud sounds
  • Skipping meals
  • Sleep pattern changes
  • Intense physical activity
  • Unusual aromas
  • Alcohol use
  • Smoking
  • Certain medications such as oral contraceptives and nitroglycerin

Food that Cause Migraines

  • Caffeine and alcoholic beverages
  • Food additives such as nitrates, aspartame and MSG
  • Tyramine such as in aged cheese, soy sauce and sauerkraut

Types of Migraines

Migraine with Aura

This used to be called classic migraine, complicated migraine and hemiplegic migraine. The aura occurs in at least 25% of patients that suffer from the condition. Aura symptoms can include visual issues, sensory issues, speech and language issues, and brainstem problems such as difficulty talking, vertigo, tinnitus, hearing problems, double vision and ataxia.

Acute Migraine

Also known as episodic migraine, it affects sufferers up to 14 days a month.

Chronic Migraines

Patients suffering from chronic migraine have a severe tension or migraine headache for more than 15 days a month for at least 3 months. Greater than 8 of the episodes are migraines that occur with or without aura.
