Short Description of Liver Disease
Approximately the size of a football, the liver is one of the major organs in the body. It is located just beneath the rib cage on the right side of the abdomen. The liver is responsible for digesting food as well as ridding the body of toxic substances. Liver disease may be an inherited or acquired condition. If liver disease becomes chronic it will lead to scarring or cirrhosis and will eventually result to liver failure.

- Itchiness of the skin
- Urine turns dark in color
- Presence of pale stool color or blood and tar-colored stools
- Patient feels chronic fatigue
- Nausea and vomiting
- Anorexia
- Easily gets bruised
About the Liver
The liver is one of the major organs of the body and is separated into the right and left lobe by the falciform ligament. The cells are called hepatocytes and they have a unique capacity to reproduce as a response to injury.
Hepatic Functions
The primary functions of the liver include:
- Production and excretion of bile
- Excretion of cholesterol, hormones, drugs and bilirubin
- Metabolism of carbohydrates, fats and proteins
- Activation of enzymes
- Storage of glycogen, minerals and vitamins
- Synthesis of plasma proteins such as albumin and the clotting factors
- Detoxification and purification of the blood
Etiology of Hepatic Disease
Factors that can adversely affect hepatic function and health include: over dosage of certain drugs like acetaminophen, using statin medications, alcohol abuse, cirrhosis, viruses such as hepatitis ABCDE, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and iron overload (hemochromatosis).
Hepatic disease can occur as a result of:
- Infection – Viruses and parasites can invade resulting in inflammation that reduces hepatic function.
- Abnormality in the Immune System – Autoimmune diseases attack certain parts of the body, including autoimmune hepatitis, primary biliary cirrhosis and primary sclerosing cholangitis.
- Genetics – An abnormal gene inherited from parents can result to accumulation of various substances causing damage. Examples: hemochromatosis, Wilson’s disease and alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency.
- Cancer – Liver, bile duct cancer and adenoma.
- Other Conditions – Alcohol abuse and non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH).
Risk Factors
Factors that increase your risk of getting liver disease include:
- Chronic alcohol abuse
- Using illicit drugs via shared needles
- Tattoo or body piercings
- History of blood transfusion prior to 1992
- Exposure to other people’s blood and body fluids
- Unprotected intercourse
- Exposure to certain hepatotoxic chemicals
- Diabetes
- Obesity
Prevention
- Moderate Alcohol Intake – Up to one drink per day for women and up to two drinks for men.
- Avoid Risky Behavior – If you are using illicit intravenous drugs, get help immediately.
- Vaccination – If you are at increased risk of contracting viral hepatitis, see a healthcare professional about getting the necessary vaccines.
