About Insomnia
Insomnia is a disorder where the patient has trouble falling or staying asleep. It can be a short-term (acute) condition or last a long time (chronic). The short-term variant lasts from one night to a few weeks while the chronic one may happen at least 3 nights a week for 3 months or more. This kind of sleep disorder is quite common and affect up to 70 million Americans each year.
Etiology of Insomnia
- Stress – When someone is concerned about work, school, health, finances or family matters it can keep their mind active.
- Travel or Work Schedule – The circadian rhythms of the body behave like an internal clock. Disruption of the circadian rhythm leads to insomnia.
- Poor Sleep Routine — Activities such as an irregular bedtime schedule, naps, stimulating activities prior to bedtime, and using smartphones or other screens with blue light before bed.
- Eating Too Much – Eating too much late at night may cause the body to feel physically uncomfortable while lying down.
- Medical conditions and certain medications.
- Mental Health Disorders – Anxiety disorders like post-traumatic stress disorder can lead to sleep disruption. Waking up too early can be a sign of depression.
- Medical Conditions – Medical issues associated with difficulty in sleeping include chronic pain, cancer, diabetes, heart problems, asthma, GERD, an overactive thyroid, Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disease.
- Sleep Related Issues – Sleep apnea can cause someone to stop breathing periodically throughout the night. Restless legs syndrome can prevent someone from falling asleep.
- Nicotine, Alcohol and Caffeine – Caffeinated drinks, nicotine and alcohol can all interfere with sleep.
Insomnia and Aging
The condition becomes more common as one gets older due to: changes in sleep patterns, changes in activity levels, and changes in health including chronic pain, depression, anxiety, and conditions like sleep apnea and restless legs.
Types of Insomnia
- Primary – The sleep disorder is not associated with any health problem or condition.
- Secondary – Difficulty in sleeping is due to a health problem such as asthma, depression, arthritis, heartburn or cancer.
- Sleep-Onset – The patient has difficulty getting to sleep.
- Sleep-Maintenance – Difficulty both falling asleep through the night and waking up too early.
- Mixed – Difficulty in both falling asleep and staying asleep through the night.
- Paradoxical – Where the time of sleep is underestimated.
