Introduction to Hyperpigmentation

Hyperpigmentation simply put, is the darkening of certain areas of the skin. This can often be caused by hormones, sun damage, medications or certain normal skin types. The dark spots are formed by deposits of melanin, and can result in:

  • Age spots
  • Melasma spots
  • Birthmarks
  • Skin tone variations

The standard treatment for Hyperpigmentation includes topical creams, chemical peels, and laser treatments. Chemical peels and laser treatments can have their own side effects such as darkening of the skin. This is where Universal Sound Therapy comes in.

Short Description of Hyperpigmentation

Hyperpigmentation is a kind of skin disorder that affects the color of your skin making it darker than it normally is. The skin gets its color from a pigment called melanin. When the cells become damaged, the amount of melanin production is affected. If the body makes too much then the skin gets darker.

Symptoms of Hyperpigmentation

  • Brown, tan or black spots that appear on the skin with frequent sun exposure
  • Presence of large patches of darkened skin
  • Spot or patches of darkened skin that appear after an inflammatory reaction on the skin such as eczema or acne

About Hyperpigmentation

Hyperpigmentation is a condition that occurs in the skin of patients when it produces more melanin than usual. The types of hyperpigmentation are age spots, melasma and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

Etiology and Types of Hyperpigmentation

Sun Exposure – Your body will produce more melanin pigment in order to protect your skin from prolonged exposure to UV rays, causing dark spots or patches on the skin commonly referred to as sun spots or age spots.

Melasma — A kind of health condition that causes dark patches of skin to form in women patients that experience hormonal changes such as that seen in pregnancy. Melasma is known as “the mask of pregnancy.”

Possible Melasma Triggers:

  • Hormonal changes during pregnancy, hormone treatment or oral contraceptives
  • Sun exposure
  • Certain chemical skin products that irritate the skin
  • Possible genetic component

Skin Inflammation – Areas of the skin darken due to inflammation happening on that specific area. This can occur in conditions such as acne, eczema, lupus or any skin injury.

Reactions to Medication – Hyperpigmentation can occur because of exposure to certain medications like antimalarial drugs and tricyclic antidepressants.

Medical Conditions – Darkening of the skin can result due to serious health conditions like Addison’s disease and hemochromatosis.
