About Heart Support

The heart is a pump, a muscular organ approximately the size of a fist, located slightly left of center in the chest. It is divided into the right and left sides. There are 4 valves that allow the blood to move properly by opening only one way and only when necessary. There is an electrical system that helps controls the continuous exchange of oxygen rich-blood with oxygen-poor blood.

Etiology of Heart Support Problems

Coronary Artery Disease

This refers to the buildup of fatty plaques in the arteries and is known medically as atherosclerosis. Unhealthy lifestyle choices such as bad diet, lack of exercise, overweight, smoking and other factors help lead to the condition.

Arrhythmias

It is an abnormal electrical activity resulting to irregular beating of the cardiac muscle. This can be caused by coronary artery disease, diabetes, drug abuse, excessive use of alcohol or caffeine, heart defects, high blood pressure, smoking, and stress.

Cardiomyopathy

This refers to thickening or enlargement of the cardiac muscle and may vary depending on the type: Dilated, Hypertrophic, or Restrictive Cardiomyopathy.

Infection

Endocarditis is when bacteria reaches the cardiac muscle. However, viruses and parasites may also cause it.

Risk Factors

  1. Age — getting older does increase the risk of narrow or damaged arteries.
  2. Sex – Men more than women are at greater risk but the risk becomes equal upon menopause.
  3. Family History — A strong family history of cardiac problems.
  4. Smoking — nicotine results in tightening of the blood vessels.
  5. Poor Diet — A diet that is high in fat, salt, sugar and cholesterol.
  6. Hypertension — Poorly managed hypertension results to hardening and thickening of the arteries.
  7. Elevated Cholesterol Levels — increases the risk of plaque formation.
  8. Diabetes – The disease in itself increases the risk of cardiac disease.
  9. Sedentary Lifestyle – Lack or zero exercise is associated with a lot of form of cardiac problems.
  10. Stress — high stress levels damage the arteries and worsen other risk factors.
  11. Bad Dental Hygiene — Poor dental hygiene can result to bacteria entering the bloodstream.

Complications

  • Heart Failure — Occurs when the organ can no longer pump enough blood to meet the physiological needs of your body.
  • Myocardial Infarction — A clot obstructing the flow of blood through a vessel that feeds the cardiac muscle.
  • Stroke — Occurs when the blood vessels to your brain are blocked or narrowed.
  • Aneurysm — A bulge in the arterial wall. If it bursts, results to life-threatening internal bleeding.

Prevention

Sound therapy is a unique tool that can work to prevent cardiac problems. Sound therapy relieves stress and is completely without side effects. Sound helps through changing mood, helping the patient relax and therefore lowering the risk.
