Short Description of Fatty Tumor
Fatty tumors commonly known as lipomas are non-cancerous fatty tissue growths that develop underneath the skin. They are not harmful and do not usually require treatment.
Symptoms of Fatty Tumor
The fatty tumor is generally:
- Soft to touch
- Moves easily if prodded by the finger
- Located just beneath the skin
- Colorless
- Grows slowly
About Fatty Tumor
A fatty tumor or lipomas is fatty tissue that grows just beneath the skin. They move easily when you touch them and feel rubbery, not hard. Most fatty tumor growths are not painful and do not cause any major health issues so rarely if ever they need treatment.
Etiology of Fatty Tumors
A fatty tumor is a round or oval-shaped lump of tissue that moves easily when you touch it. It is made of fat and does not usually cause any pain. Fatty tumor growths may occur anywhere on the body but are most common on the back, torso or trunk, shoulder, arms and back. They are considered benign soft tissue tumors. Approximately 1 of every 1000 people has a fatty tumor. They may occur between ages 40 and 60 but can develop at any age.
Other features include:
- Round or oval-shaped: The fatty lumps of rubbery tissue are usually symmetrical.
- Moveable: They sit just beneath the skin’s surface and move when you touch them.
- Smaller than 2 inches in diameter: In a few cases, lipomas can be larger than 6 inches wide.
Conditions that result to the development of multiple fatty tumors on the body include:
- Dercum’s disease: This rare disorder causes painful lipomas to grow, most often on the arms, legs and trunk.
- Gardner syndrome: A form of a disorder called familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP), Gardner syndrome causes lipomas and a range of health problems.
- Hereditary multiple lipomatosis: Also called familial multiple lipomatosis, this disorder is inherited.
- Madelung’s disease: This condition occurs most often in men who drink alcohol excessively.
Diagnosis of Fatty Tumor
Lipomas can be diagnosed via physical examination. The doctor will touch the lipoma and ascertain if there is pain or tenderness. A biopsy may be needed to determine if the growth is benign.
Types of Fatty Tumor
- Angiolipoma: This type contains fat and blood vessels. Angiolipomas are often painful.
- Conventional: The most common type, a conventional lipoma contains white fat cells.
- Fibrolipoma: Fat and fibrous tissue makes up this type of lipoma.
- Hibernoma: This kind of lipoma contains brown fat.
- Myelolipoma: These lipomas contain fat and tissues that produce blood cells.
- Spindle cell: The fat cells in these lipomas are longer than they are wide.
- Pleomorphic: These lipomas have fat cells of various sizes and shapes.
Since it is considered a benign growth, there is no chance it can spread to other parts of the body and cause harm.
