Short Description of Endocrine System Disorders
Endocrine system disorders are diseases that are associated with the endocrine glands of the body. The endocrine system produces hormones, which are chemicals sent out, or secreted via the bloodstream.
About the Endocrine System
The endocrine system is a network of glands that create and release hormones that help maintain many essential body functions. It is responsible for how your heart beats, the bones develop and tissues grow. It also plays an essential role in whether or not you develop certain diseases like diabetes, thyroid disease, growth problems, sexual dysfunction and other hormone-related diseases.
The endocrine glands are composed of:
- Adrenal: Two glands that sit on top of the kidneys that release the hormone cortisol.
- Hypothalamus: A part of the lower middle brain that tells the pituitary when to release hormone.
- Ovaries: The female reproductive organs that release eggs and produce sex hormones.
- Islet cells in the pancreas: Cells in the pancreas control the release of insulin and glucagon.
- Parathyroid: Four tiny glands in the neck that play a role in bone development.
- Pineal: Found near the center of the brain that may be linked to sleep patterns.
- Pituitary: Found at the base of brain behind the sinuses. It is often called the “master gland.”
- Testes: The male reproductive glands that produce sperm and sex hormones.
- Thymus: Located in the upper chest that helps develops the body’s immune system early in life.
- Thyroid: A butterfly-shaped tissue located at the front of the neck and controls metabolism.
Etiology of Endocrine Disorders
These are normally grouped into two categories:
- The disease that happens when a gland produces too much or too little of the hormone, resulting in a hormonal imbalance.
- The disease that develops due to lesions in the endocrine system, which may or may not affect hormone levels.
Types of Endocrine Disorder
The most common endocrine disorder in the United States is diabetes mellitus. Here are some of the other common disorders:
- Adrenal Insufficiency – The release too little of the hormone cortisol and sometimes, aldosterone.
- Cushing’s disease – There is an overproduction of a pituitary hormone that leads to an overactive adrenal.
- Gigantism (acromegaly) – When the pituitary produces too much growth hormone.
- Hyperthyroidism – In this condition the thyroid produces too much thyroid hormone resulting to weight loss, palpitations, sweating and nervousness.
- Hypothyroidism – The thyroid does not produce enough thyroid hormone resulting to fatigue, constipation, dry skin and depression.
- Hypopituitarism – The release of little or no hormones and may be due to a number of different diseases.
- Multiple endocrine neoplasia I and II — rare genetic conditions that result to tumors of the parathyroid, adrenal, and thyroid.
- Polycystic ovary syndrome – known as PCOS it refers to the overproduction of hormones.
- Precocious puberty – abnormally early puberty that happens when there is release of sex hormones early in life.
