Short Description of Cellulite
Cellulite refers to the formation of dimples and lumps in the skin. Common names for cellulite include orange-peel skin, cottage-cheese skin, hail damage and mattress phenomenon. The condition affects both men and women but is more common in women due to the different distributions of fat, muscle and connective tissue.
Symptoms of Cellulite
Dimpled, bumpy skin that is often described as having a cottage cheese or orange peel texture.
About Cellulite
Cellulite is a common but harmless skin condition that results to lumpy, dimpled flesh on the hips, buttocks, thighs and abdomen. It is a condition more prevalent to women. Statistics show that between 80 to 90 percent of women may experience some form of cellulite during the course of their lives.
Etiology of Cellulite
Cellulite is primarily composed of normal fat cells that are not necessarily due to being overweight or obese, inactive or having ill health. Since women characteristically have more subcutaneous fat compared to men, it is reasonable to expect women to develop more cellulite. The exact cause of the condition is unknown but it appears to be a result of the interaction between connective tissue in the dermatological layer that lies beneath the surface of the skin and the layer of fat that sits below it.
Grades of Cellulite
In 2009, a cellulite severity scale was published that ranks the condition using three grades:
Grade 1, or mild: There is an “orange-peel” appearance, with between 1 and 4 superficial depressions, and a slightly “draped” or sagging appearance to the skin.
Grade 2, or moderate: There are between five and nine medium-depth depressions, a “cottage cheese” appearance, and the skin appears moderately draped.
Grade 3, or severe: There is a “mattress” appearance, with 10 or more deep depressions, and the skin is severely draped.
Risk Factors for the Development of Cellulite
Age
Increased age causes the skin to become less elastic, thinner and more likely to sag thereby increasing the chances of cellulite development.
Hormonal Factors
Estrogen, insulin, noradrenaline, thyroid hormones and prolactin all play a role in the production of cellulite. When estrogen levels in women decrease as they approach menopause, blood flow to the connective tissue beneath the skin also decreases.
Genes play a role
There are certain genes that have been identified for cellulite development. Genetic factors may be linked to a person’s speed of metabolism, distribution of fat beneath the skin, ethnicity and circulatory levels.
Dietary and Lifestyle Factors
Cellulite is not due to toxins but an active and healthy lifestyle can help reduce the risk of developing it. People that have a high fat, high carbohydrate and salt diet with very little fiber are more than likely to have more amounts of cellulite.
