Cataracts refer to a cloudy area located in the lens of your eyes. Cataracts are common as the person ages. More than 50% of Americans aged 80 and above have cataracts or have undergone cataract surgery to get rid of it.

About Cataracts

Cataracts are the clouding of the normally clear lens of your eyes. Clouded eyesight caused by cataracts can make it very challenging for patients to read, drive a car most especially at night or appreciate the expression of a friend’s face.

Most cataracts develop slowly over time and do not disturb sight during the early stages.

Risk Factors

The risk of developing cataracts increases as the patient gets older. You are at a higher risk if you:

• Have certain medical problems such as diabetes mellitus
• Drink too much alcohol
• Have a strong family history of cataracts
• Presence of eye injury, eye surgery or radiation treatment
• Spent too much time out in the sun
• Take steroid medications

Etiology of Cataracts

Most cases of cataracts are due to the normal changes in your eyes when you age. Around age 40, the proteins in the eyes begin to break down and clump together. The clump causes a cloudy area — this is the cataract. Over time the condition gets worse as the clouds of proteins takes more of the lens.

Types of Cataracts

Age-Related Cataracts

The most common type of cataract, caused by natural changes in the lens of the eye.

Traumatic Cataract

Caused by serious eye injuries that damage the lens.

Radiation Cataract

Caused by exposure to certain kinds of radiation including ultraviolet rays from the sun and radiation treatment for cancer.

Pediatric Cataract

Kids can develop cataracts as well. Congenital cataracts means they are born with the condition. Cataracts in children are quite rare and are usually genetic in nature.

Secondary Cataract

After cataract surgery, some patients may develop a condition called secondary cataract (posterior capsule opacification) that results in their vision becoming cloudy once more. Treated easily using laser surgery.
