Short Description of Blood Disorders

Diseases that affect the blood are known as blood disorders. There are many kinds of blood disorders and they can have a significant impact on the quantity and quality of the cells or proteins in the clotting system or immune system of the body.

Symptoms of Blood Disorders

• Fatigue
• Shortness of breath
• Inability to focus due to lack of oxygenated blood
• Muscle weakness
• Palpitations

Common Symptoms of White Blood Disorders:

• Chronic infection
• Fatigue
• Unexplained weight loss
• General feeling of not feeling ok

Common Symptoms of Platelet Disorders:

• Cuts or sores that do not heal or are slow to healing
• Blood that fails to clot after an injury
• Easy bruising
• Nose bleeding
• Gum bleeding

About Blood Disorders

This refers to diseases that affect the function and quantity of RBC, WBC and platelets. All three are formed in the bone marrow. The function of RBC is to transport oxygen to the body’s organs and tissues. WBC is responsible for fighting off infections.

Types

Red Blood Cell Disorders

These are disorders that affect the RBC inside the body. The cells are responsible for carrying oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body.

Anemia

This is a condition where there is a lack of mineral iron. The body needs to produce the protein hemoglobin, which is responsible for the blood’s oxygen-carrying capacity.

• Iron deficiency anemia — occurs when the body does not have enough iron stores
• Pernicious anemia — an autoimmune condition wherein the body is unable to absorb the right amounts of vitamin B-12
• Aplastic anemia — a rare but serious condition where the bone marrow stops manufacturing enough new cells
• Autoimmune hemolytic anemia — causes the immune system to destroy RBC quicker than the body can replace them

White Blood Cell Disorders

WBC or leucocytes assist in defending the body from infection and foreign invaders.

• Lymphoma — a kind of cancer that occurs in the lymphatic system
• Leukemia — a type of cancer wherein cancerous WBC multiplies within the bone marrow
• Myelodysplastic syndrome — affects the health of the bone marrow, resulting in too many immature cells

Platelet Disorders

Platelets are considered first responder cells if you have an injury such as a wound or a cut.

• Not enough platelets — can result in significant blood loss
• Too much platelets — propensity for clots to form
• Platelets that incorrectly clot — cannot stick to other cells or vessel walls

Disorders of the platelets are primarily inherited:

• Hemophilia — most serious complication is excessive and prolonged bleeding
• Primary Thrombocytopenia — can result in increased clotting, puts patients at higher risk for stroke and heart attack
