Etiology of Autism
While doctors and researchers still do not know for sure the exact cause of autism spectrum disorder, the data suggests that genes play a role with the environment in order to affect development that leads to autism. Some of the risk factors of the condition are:
- Having a brother or sister with autism
- Having older parents
- Presence of certain genetic disorders such as Down Syndrome, fragile X syndrome and Rett syndrome
- Very low birth weight infants
How Do You Diagnose Autism?
Developmental pediatricians and other doctors examine a person or child’s development and behavior and the diagnosis is normally reached by age two years if screened early.
According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, children should be screened for delays in development at 9, 18, 24 and 30 months. Screening specifically for autism at the 18 and 24th month well-child visit.
Complications of Autism
If undiagnosed the child or adult will develop or already has problems with social interaction, communication and behavior which can lead to:
- Issues in school and learning
- Inability to keep a job
- Inability to live on his or her own
- Deep social isolation
- Stress within the family
- Strong possibility of being bullied in class or on the job
Can Autism Be Prevented?
There is no real way to prevent autism but there are ways to mitigate its effects on the patient in order to help him live a better standard of life. The key is early diagnosis and treatment so as to improve behavior, learn skills and develop language and communication.
