Types of Stroke
Hemorrhagic Stroke
Research show that this comprises about 13% of cases and is caused by a weakened vessel that bleeds and ruptures into the surrounding brain. The blood accumulates and compresses the surrounding brain material. There are two kinds of hemorrhagic stroke and these are intracerebral (within the brain) hemorrhage or subarachnoid hemorrhage. This type of stroke occurs because of a weak blood vessel that ruptured. There are two kinds of weak blood vessels that cause hemorrhagic stroke and these are aneurysms and AVMs or arteriovenous malformations.
Arteriovenous Malformation – As a rule, arteries carry oxygen-rich blood from the heart to the brain, and veins carry blood with less oxygen away from the brain and back to the heart. When an AVM occurs, it results in a tangle of blood vessels in the brain bypasses normal brain tissue and directly diverts blood from the arteries to the veins. The condition happens in less than 1% of the general population and is more common in males than females. The condition is usually congenital but not hereditary and can occur anywhere within the brain or on its covering. Brain AVMs contain weakened blood vessels that direct the blood away from the normal tissue and they dilate over time. Eventually bursting because of the high blood flow pressure from the arteries.
Cerebral Aneurysms – An aneurysm is a weakened area in a blood vessel that usually gets bigger and is most often described as a “ballooning” of the vessel. It is not usually congenital and most aneurysms develop after the age of 40. They develop at branching points of arteries due to constant pressure from the blood flow. They enlarge slowly and become weak, as they get bigger, similar to a balloon that stretches. They can be due to other blood vessel disorders such as cerebral arteritis or arterial dissection. They can also happen due to infections or drugs like cocaine and amphetamines or may be due to direct brain trauma from an accident.

This type of stroke occurs when a vessel that carries blood to the brain is blocked. Research show that this accounts for approximately 87% of all strokes. The fatty deposits may be due to two kinds of obstruction namely: A cerebral thrombosis or blood clot that results from the fatty plaque within the artery. 2nd may be due to a cerebral embolism wherein a blood clot forms at another area usually the heart and large arteries of the upper chest and neck. Part of the clot breaks loose and enters the bloodstream until it reaches the brain’s blood vessels too small to let it pass. A main cause of embolism is an irregular heartbeat called atrial fibrillation that can result to clots forming in the heart.
TIA or Transient Ischemic Attack
Also known as a ministroke refers to a temporary period of symptoms that is similar to a stroke but then goes away. A transient ischemic attack does not result to permanent damage and is caused by a temporary decrease in blood supply to the brain, which could last as little as a few minutes.
