Short Description of Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis known commonly as wear and tear arthritis, is the most common kind of arthritis. It is associated with breakdown of cartilage in joints and may occur in virtually any part of the body.

Symptoms of Osteoarthritis

  • Joint pain
  • Stiffness of the joint
  • Loss of flexibility and reduced range of motion
  • Presence of tenderness or discomfort when pressing on the affected areas with the fingers
  • Presence of crepitus, grating, clicking, crackling and popping sounds
  • Bone spurs

About Osteoarthritis

As mentioned above, osteoarthritis is the most common kind of chronic joint problem. Aside from wear and tear, it is also called degenerative and degenerative joint disease.  A joint refers to two bones coming together. Cartilage is the protective tissue that cloths the ends of the bones. For patients suffering from OA, the cartilage breakdown, resulting to the bones rubbing against one another. The result is pain, stiffness and other physical manifestations.  Osteoarthritis may happen in any joint but commonly affects the hands, fingers, shoulder, spine, hips and knees. The disease happens mostly to older folks but it may also happen at any age.

The disease is the leading cause of disability according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It affects over 32.5 million adults in the US.  As the disease progresses, the pain also becomes more intense. Over time, the swelling may occur in the joint and the surrounding area.

Etiology of Osteoarthritis

The primary cause of OA is joint damage. This results in a cumulative effect over time and is the reason why age is one of the main causes of the joint damage that leads to osteoarthritis.  The older a person gets; the more repetitive stress has occurred on their joints.  Other causes of joint damage are:

  • Past injury like a torn cartilage, dislocated joints or ligament injuries
  • Malformation in the joints
  • Poor posture
  • Obesity
  • Genes – Some people have an inherited defect in one of their genes responsible for the creation of cartilage. What they get is defective cartilage that leads to a faster deterioration of joints.  People that are born with joint abnormalities are at higher risk for developing the disease and those born with an abnormality of the spine (scoliosis) are also more likely to have OA of the spine.
  • Obesity – Maintenance of ideal weight is vital to preventing the development of osteoarthritis in obese individuals. The most common areas that are affected include: hips, spine and knees.
  • Injury – There is no doubt that injuries play a major role in the development of OA. For instance, athletes that suffer from knee-related injuries are at higher risk for developing OA of the knee.  Moreover, people that have suffered a severe back injury are more likely to develop osteoarthritis of the spine.  People that have had a fracture near a joint are at higher risk of developing OA in that particular joint.
  • Overuse of the Joint — The overuse of certain joints also increases the risk for developing OA. For instance, people that have jobs that need repeated bending of the knee are more likely to develop knee osteoarthritis.
  • Other Diseases – Patients that have rheumatoid arthritis, known as the 2nd most common kind of arthritis, are also at higher risk for developing OA.  Moreover, certain rare conditions like iron overload or too much growth hormone in the body also increases the chance of developing OA.

Diagnosis of Osteoarthritis

OA is diagnosed based on the combination of the following factors such as: description of symptoms, location and pattern of pain, physical examination and x-rays. The x-ray can tell us how much joint damage has happened. On occasion, blood tests may be performed to determine if entertaining a different kind of arthritis is also present.

The Role of Weight and Exercise in OA

Keeping at the recommended weight helps prevent OA of the knees, joints and spine while also reduces the stress on these weight-bearing joints and likewise also reduces pain in joints already affected. Exercise is vital in improving joint movement and to help strengthen muscles that surround the joints.  Light exercise like swimming, walking on flat surfaces are recommended as they offer less stress to the joints.  Avoid activities that increase joint pain such as jogging and high impact aerobics. There are also exercises that strengthen the muscles in order to reduce pain especially in the knee.
