Short Description of Lymphatic Disease
Lymphatic disease are disorders that affect the lymph nodes and organs that form part of the lymphatic system such as: thymus, bone marrow, spleen, tonsils, appendix and Peyer’s patches of the small intestine.
Symptoms of Lymphatic Disease
- Painless swelling of lymph nodes in your neck, armpits or groin.
- Persistent fatigue.
- Fever.
- Night sweats.
- Shortness of breath.
- Unexplained weight loss.
- Itchy skin.
About Lymphatic Disease
In order to understand how lymphatic disease affects the body we need to know what the lymphatic system is and how it contributes to the normal functioning of the body. The lymphatic system consists of a network of tissues and organs and consists of:
- Lymph – Fluid that contains white blood cells that protect against bacteria and viruses.
- Lymph Vessels –These vessels transport the lymph throughout the different parts of the body and are different from normal blood vessels.
- Lymph Nodes – These are glands found throughout the lymph vessels and along with the spleen, the nodes are where the white blood cells fight against infection.
The bone marrow and thymus also produce the cells in lymph and are part of the system as well. The lymphatic system is responsible for clearing away infection and ensures that body fluids are balanced. If it is not functioning properly, fluid begins to buildup in the tissues resulting to swelling and this is called lymphedema. Other issues in the lymphatic system include infections, blockage and even cancer.
Etiology of Lymphatic Disease
- Blockage – If there is obstruction in the lymphatic system it can lead to an accumulation of fluid known as lymphedema. The obstruction may be due to scar tissue that develops when the lymph vessels are damaged or if they are removed as part of a surgical procedure, by radiation therapy, injury, or if in the tropical countries, by infection with a threadworm known as filariasis that results in blockage of the lymph ducts.
- Primary Lymphedema – This is due to alterations or mutations in the genes that are responsible for the development of the lymphatic system. The defective genes cause the parts of the lymphatic system responsible for draining fluid to not develop properly or not work normally. Primary lymphedema often occurs when there is a strong family history, but not every child born to someone with the disease will develop it.
- Secondary Lymphedema – This develops in people that had a previously normal lymphatic system that then becomes damaged. This may have a number of different causes.
- Infection – An infection can result to swollen lymph nodes due to the fact that the lymph nodes themselves are inflamed. There are instances when the lymph nodes are infection and this is called lymphadenitis. This may due to bacteria that spread via the lymphatic system from the original site of the infection.
- Cancer – White blood cell cancers such as lymphoma may develop in the lymph nodes and tumors from other organ systems can metastasize or spread to lymph nodes that is in close proximity with a tumor. Cancers in other areas may also block the lymphatic ducts. Lymphangiosarcoma is a very rare tumor that develops in the cells of the lymphatic system.
Diagnosis
Diagnosis of lymphatic disease involves taking a detailed history and physical examination of the patient. There are tests that can help evaluate the body’s lymphatic system for disease such as lymphoscintigraphy. The procedure calls for using small amounts of radioactive materials called radiotracers that are injected into the bloodstream, swallowed, inhaled or injected into the skin. The radiotracer travels through the area being examined and gives off energy in the form of gamma rays which are detected using a special camera and a computer in order to establish images of the insides of your body. Since it is able to pinpoint molecular activity within the body, the procedure offers the possibility to identify lymphatic disease in its earliest stages.
- Bioimpedance Testing – The test uses small metallic discs called electrodes that are placed on different areas of the body. They release a small, painless electric charge that is measured using a handheld device. Changes in the strength of the current can indicate the presence of fluid in the tissue and possible lymphatic disease.
