About Cataracts
Cataracts are the clouding of the normally clear lens of your eyes. For patients that have cataracts, looking through cloudy lenses is similar to looking through frosty or fogged-up windows. Clouded eyesight caused by cataracts can make it very challenging for patients to read, drive a car most especially at night or appreciate the expression of a friend’s face. Most cataracts develop slowly over time and do not disturb sight during the early stages. Over time however, it eventually interferes with your sight. Initially, better lighting and prescription glasses can improve vision but if impaired vision makes it already too difficult to perform normal daily activities, there is a need to evaluate the condition to determine if surgery or other treatments can help.
Risk Factors
The risk of developing cataracts increases as the patient gets older. You are at a higher risk of developing symptoms if you:
- Have certain medical problems such as diabetes mellitus
- Drink too much alcohol
- Have a strong family history of cataracts
- Presence of eye injury, eye surgery or radiation treatment to the upper part of the body
- Spent too much time out in the sun
- Take steroid medications to treat a variety of health issues such as rashes or arthritis
Etiology of Cataracts
Most cases of cataracts are due to the normal changes in your eyes when you age. When you are still young, the lens of your eyes is clear but around age 40, the proteins in the eyes begin to break down and clump together. The clump causes a cloudy area – this is the cataract. Over time the condition gets worse as the clouds of proteins takes more of the lens of your eyes. The lens of the eyes is mostly made of protein and water. Normally, these proteins line up in such a way that the lens stays completely clear and light can pass through without any hindrance. When the proteins begin to clump together, the lens gets cloudy and prevents you from seeing clearly. The lens may also develop a yellow brown tint that can change the way you perceive colors. Researchers do not know exactly what makes some people get cataracts but they are aware of some things that can make cataracts develop much faster
Types of Cataracts
Age-Related Cataracts
As the name suggest, a cataract can form due to natural changes in the lens of the eye. This is what is called age-related cataract and is considered to be the most common type of cataract. Risk factors for the development of this condition include:
- Cigarette smoking
- Too much alcohol intake
- Strong family history of cataracts
- Presence of diabetes
- Certain eye surgeries such as glaucoma
- Steroid intake for treating other conditions
Traumatic Cataract
If you experienced serious eye injuries that can damage the lens it can result to the development of cataracts. The cataract can quickly form after the injury or may occur some years after.
Radiation Cataract
Exposure to certain kinds of radiation may result to the development of cataracts. This includes ultraviolet rays from the sun and radiation treatment for cancer.
Pediatric Cataract
Kids can develop cataracts as well. Congenital cataracts means they are born with the condition or it may also occur later on. It is worthy to note that cataracts in children are quite rare and are usually genetic in nature meaning a strong family history may predispose child to develop it. The cataract can also occur due to serious complications from pregnancy or due to illnesses during childhood such as uveitis or tumors in the eye. Kids also get cataracts from the same causes as adults such as: eye injury, radiation exposure, steroid use etcetera. If a pediatric cataract is too big to cause significant vision problems, it requires immediate treatment. It is vital that the cataract is treated early on so that the patient does not develop other abnormalities like amblyopia or lazy eye. Other pediatric cataracts are so miniscule that they do not cause any problems for the child. The doctor can monitor these smaller ones to ensure they do not cause problems later on.
Secondary Cataract
After cataract surgery, some patients may develop a condition called secondary cataract that results in their vision becoming cloudy once more. This is called after-cataract or posterior capsule opacification. Secondary cataract unfortunately is quite common but is easy to treat using laser surgery at the doctor’s clinic. During the cataract surgery, the doctor removes the lens and replaces it with a clear artificial one. However, over time the thin membrane that holds the new lens may develop scar tissue and make the vision cloudy once more.
Sound Therapy for Cataracts
Why use sound therapy for patients suffering from this condition? Sound therapy is a good alternative to surgery and offers no side effects. Sound therapy has been around for decades and has been used to treat a number of different medical conditions. Patients can benefit from the healing offered by this alternative approach.
